Chapter Nine

God, is this love?

Mary sat beside Eban, amazed how he responded to her touch, stunned at the expression on his face. Stunned even more that his expression mirrored how she felt.

“No man has ever looked at me the way you’re looking at me.”

He stirred slowly after the shout that had drained him. He blew a breath loudly through his mouth and took her hand. “No woman has ever touched me the way you have.”

She shook her head. “I don’t understand. You said many women have done these things to you—”

He squeezed her hand, nodded, but stared hard into her eyes. “Exactly. They did these things to me.” He held her hand against his chest. “You did them for me and touched my heart.”

Mary blinked, her heart full, tears blurring her vision. “I pleased you?”

“More than pleased.” He cupped her cheek. “You loved me.”

Her heart lightened. “I loved you?”

“Yes. You touched me not out of fear or duty, but love. Patient. Kind. Not rejoicing in the wrong. Not demanding its own way.”

“That’s from the Bible. First Corinthians, yes?”

“Yes.” He took her face in both his hands and drew her to him. “Now, let me love you.”

Her heart stilled as their mouths molded one to the other. The press of his lips to hers filled her mind with meaning she’d never thought would be hers.

You’re loved.

You’re wanted.

One tear then another slid down her face, adding their saltiness to the sweetness of their kiss.

Eban pulled back, thumbed the tears away. “Please tell me these are tears of joy.”

She laughed then cupped his cheeks. “Yes. Joy. Joy too full to be contained.”

He took her hands from his face and held them against his chest. “So, Mary Hamilton, will you marry me?”

She wrapped her arms around his neck and answered with a kiss full of yes.

Eban grabbed her waist and pulled her on top of him. The plains of his chest and thighs supported her, lifted her as if she were feather light. The gleam in his eyes showered her with approval and appreciation.

“I could lay here like this until I die,” he said.

She smiled and traced the contours of his lips with her fingers. “Hmmm. Before or after we marry?”

“Definitely after. I plan to live a long, happy life with you.” He rolled her onto her back then reclined with his cheek against his fist. He sucked her finger into his mouth, almost mirroring how she’d sucked him. An odd giggle tittered past her lips. What a wonder that a sound so tiny could come from her body so large.

He withdrew her finger then kissed it. “How about we tie the knot today?”

She gasped, another absurdly dainty sound. “So soon?”

His lips thinned. His expression grew serious. “You and I know better than most that tomorrow is promised to no one.”

Her gaze fell to the welt on his throat. She fingered her own. “That’s sure enough true.” She righted herself then crossed her legs tailor fashion. “All right. Let’s marry today.”

He sat up then kissed her.
